Best Paint For Kitchen Cupboards Reviews

Dulux Easycare Kitchen Matte Emulsion Paint

Best Overall

I love almost everything about the Dulux Easycare Kitchen paint, which is the reason for my placing it as the best overall. My kitchen cabinet isn't the worst looking one in the world, but it has taken a bit of a beating over the years. It's no surprise, therefore, that my cabinet isn't the most perfect one in the world. Thankfully, this paint has an incredibly smooth finish, which is great for covering those little problems right up.

This is great kitchen paint for cupboards. Note that this one is designed specifically for use in your kitchen area, which is excellent for those who are looking for a dedicated product. Feel free to take it past the cabinet if you want too, as it works amazingly well for your ceilings and walls also. The paint is sold in a soft vanilla and pure brilliant white colours, so feel free to select the one that complements the aesthetic of your kitchen the best. Applying it is nothing short of a breeze, whether you use a roller or a paintbrush. I'm a bit of a paintbrush person myself.

Grease and stain-resistant, which is a necessary property for kitchen applications

Both colour options offer a rich and beautiful smooth finish that does a great job of giving a new look to your cabinet

The paint is built to last, and the colour doesn't fade, though it is washable

As is the case with other paints on the market, the dried colour looks slightly different from the sample colour displayed

For best results, two coats must be used, which can be an issue for some people

HQC Kitchen Matte Paint

Best For Easy Cleaning

HQC Kitchen Matte is water-based paint that has managed to create a mixture that allows for simplicity in wipe cleaning, which is excellent for people like me who don't enjoy paint cleaning processes that are too complex. Thanks to the use of eco-friendly materials in its creation, there is no worry about toxicity, and it also doesn't have a strong smell.

I love using this to paint kitchen cupboards to keep things looking fresh, but I don't like having to spend time outside during the days because the smell is driving me nuts. Not everyone has the luxury of proper ventilation, and this is a superb option for those who don't.

If you're a fan of variety like I am, then be prepared to feel like a kid in a candy store with 24 different colour options. You can go for just about any look you want in your kitchen with all these options. You get a mid-sheen finish with this paint, and it provides moderate protection against natural kitchen elements. It does this by a breathable layer that performs moisture evaporation to prevent any damage or stains.

  • There are 24 colours available, which means that you can more closely match your style with this kitchen cupboard paint to other pieces in the room
  • There is no primer needed before applying this paint, and it's easy to apply
  • It's very easy to wipe clean
  • Lighter colours seem less resistant to stains than the darker ones
  • Quite a few coats are required to achieve the desired level of consistency.

Dulux Fresh Up Renovation Paint

Most Versatile

The name of this paint tells you much of what you need to know. Dulux designed it with renovation in mind. I really love the fact that there's no need for any primer. I don't know if you can tell, but I can be kind of lazy where the painting process is concerned. I'm all for an easy time and an easy cleanup. All you need to do is clean your cabinet surface, and the painting can begin.

While it's not the quickest drying paint on the list, it does remarkably well in that area. Complete drying happens in just eight hours. It's still enough time for me to touch it accidentally, but it's not too extreme. The versatility is where this paint truly shines. Naturally, it's good at covering wood, but it also does a great job with PVC, metal, melamine, etc.

Surfaces don't need to be primed before you start painting

It's conducive to the application via both roller and paintbrush

It can be applied to a significant effect on an incredible variety of surfaces

If surfaces come in direct contact with food, there are toxicity concerns

Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Spray Paint

Best Budget Option

Rust-Oleum offers this fantastic budget option in the form of multi-purpose spray paint. It's the most affordable option on the list, as you can grab yourself a couple of cans for a fraction of the price of the others. Before you ask, those cans can give you the coverage you need, once you know what you're doing. It's not hard to unintentionally waste spray paint.

The finish types are surprisingly smooth for a paint type that isn't applied with a brush or roller. I also like the variety, as there are numerous colours available. There are 42 options, but several of them are almost identical, which realistically reduces that number. Still, there are multiple colours to choose from. Note that the paint is suitable for both interior and exterior use.

A great variety of colours are available to complement your existing look

You can choose from matte, satin, and gloss finishes

The price is very affordable to your kitchen paint project

If you can't apply spray paint well, you may end up wasting this.

Dulux Easycare Bathroom Soft Sheen Emulsion Paint

Best For Drying

The next offering is yet another one from Dulux that I just couldn't leave off the list. It may be a bit puzzling for you to see a bathroom emulsion paint here, but it does a surprisingly good job of sprucing up a kitchen cabinet because of its ability to handle different surface types.

This paint is quite resistant to kitchen hazards, such as grease and stains. Note that it is also highly resistant to water damage too, and this is because of its design, which offers protection in high-condensation areas. Chromalock technology is also something Dulux baked into the design, which means that you can expect to have a brilliant colour for a very long time.

It also isn't hard to apply, which is great because you can use your roller or paintbrush to great effect. This paint will most likely need more than one coat. Did I mention that this thing dries in record time? Well, it does, and that's great for clumsy people like me who seem to love accidentally touching painted surfaces way too quickly.

The soft sheen is incredibly tough, which allows the paint to stay firm in the face of environmental challenges

This option dries very quickly and can be ready for its second coat in as little as six hours

Thanks to Chormalock technology, the colour is maintained for a very long time

While the coverage is great, you may find that you need as much as four coats in some cases to get the desired finish

Nuvo Cabinet And Cupboard Paint Kit

Best Value

The final offering is from Nuvo, and it is designed specifically for applications, such as your kitchen cabinets. This applies whether the cabinet is made of melamine, metal, wood, vinyl, or some other material. No priming is necessary here, which is a huge plus.

Naturally, the surface you're painting does need to be clean before you begin, though. I simply cannot get over the immense value for money that you get with this option. It's not just paint that you get. In fact, you get two cans of paint instead of one.

The package also contains a roller arm, two roller covers, two stir sticks, one brush, and a set of illustrated instructions. If you've never painted anything before, you don't need to buy anything but this kit to get started.

The paint stands up very well to the kitchen environment, regardless of the volume of traffic. It's also remarkably easy to apply. All Giani products are water-based and lead free, with automotive-grade durability.

Everything you need to get your painting started is included

Applying the paint is a cakewalk

The cure time is 14 days, which means you need to be careful with painted cabinets for a whole two weeks

Considerations When Buying

Does The Style Of The Cabinet Matter?

This matters where colour is concerned. Apart from just getting a new look, the process of painting your kitchen cabinet has a decorative nature. You can ruin the aesthetic of your kitchen because you've used a colour that doesn't play well with the rest of it. Consider a traditional kitchen, for example.

If you have such a kitchen, the 'regular' colours, such as white, tend to be best for your cabinet. So, you may find that you don't even need colour variety since this is the default colour for many brand offerings.

If you try to spice things up these kitchens with bright colours, great-tasting food may not be enough to fix the loss of appetite caused by the unappealing look. Alternatively, you may have a modern design with a colour pop cabinet, which is conducive to the use of an array of colours.

Painting over particularly dark colours will require more than one coat and sometimes three or four coats to get the bright finish.

Toxicity Considerations

Paint fumes can have adverse effects when inhaled excessively, and renovation is not worth risking your health for. When you choose your paint, it should be one that you can confidently use without putting yourself at risk.

Much of this is based on the presence or absence of proper ventilation in your home. Some people don't have very good airflow, so the air quality in the home is not the best.

If you combine that with a paint that gives off strong fumes and an equally strong odour, you risk putting yourself in a position where there is excessive inhalation. In such a scenario, it may be best for you to go for a paint type that is made from ingredients that reduce the fume output.

Of course, if your ventilation is good, then this is less of a concern to you, as you can simply let nature take its course after your new paint job is complete. Try to ascertain which category a paint falls in if you have poor ventilation so that you can make a healthy choice.

Drying Time

Post-painting touch and use of your cabinet should be done based on the time a paint takes to dry. Drying, in this sense, refers to a state in which the paint can be touched without any disruption of its integrity.

Paints with a quick-drying time are favoured, as subsequent coats can be applied faster, and the road to using your cabinet again is much shorter when the painting is done. Note that there is also a hardening process that must take place after drying before the paint has fully settled. The quicker your paint dries, the quicker that it can move on to this phase.

This isn't just about the paint. The chances are that you can afford the paint, but is that all you need to buy? Depending on your situation and the paint you choose, you may need to buy a paint primer too. You will often need to more coat on this project so work this into the cost.

Additionally, do you need any tools, such as a paintbrush or a roller? Everything needs to be present before you begin, and if you need to acquire any items to allow the painting process to run smoothly, then your budget needs to make an allowance for that. A good idea if you have nothing at all is to consider buying a value pack that contains the paint, and the tools that you need to get things going.

Paint Type

When choosing your type of cupboard paint, you want something that is both durable and easy to deal with. There are several paint types that you can choose from, but emulsion paints are your best bet where kitchen cabinets are concerned.

These paints tend to be made with water-based material for an easy spread and cleanup. This is paired with immense durability to give you a long-lasting effect.

Coat Requirement

This one is something you should pay attention to because you could end up spending more money than you could ever have imagined. Some paints can get the job done in no more than two coats, it rare one coat will do the job. There are others, however, that don't have that kind of coverage ability. Such paints can require three or even four coats before you get the finish that you want.

This means that you could inadvertently end up buying more paint than you planned to because the quantity you got wasn't enough. Pay attention to coating requirements when you make your purchase so that you can save yourself from a massive headache.

In my opinion, Dulux Easycare Kitchen Matte Emulsion Paint is a cut above the rest for being one of the best kitchen cupboard paints on the market. While many of the other paints can cover a cabinet with faded or no paint at all, this one goes the extra mile by hiding imperfections remarkably we1ll.

It is built specifically for kitchen applications and is extremely resistant to hazards, such as dirt and grease. It most likely you will need more than one coat to get the desired finish.

Additionally, not many others are washable when you need them to be, while unmovable on surfaces where they should be. It's two colours can serve in a variety of kitchen styles, the price is fair, it dries quickly, and it's the kind of emulsion style cabinet paint that gets the job done.

The Nuvo Cabinet and Cupboard Paint Kit get second place because it does a good job and comes with all the essentials you need for painting. Dulux Fresh Up Renovation Paint is the second runner up, thanks to its surface versatility. Good luck in your kitchen cupboard painting project.
