Troubleshooting: Subaru Engine Hard To Start. 

1. Check Spark Plug

Make sure that the spark plug is not damaged or worn. Replace the spark plug if the porcelain insulator is cracked, an electrode is damaged or burned away, or there are heavy carbon deposits at the electrode.

An electronic spark plug tester can be used to determine whether the spark plug is defective. The absence of spark indicates that the spark plug needs to be replaced.

2. Carburetor

The engine can receive too much or too little fuel. A faulty carburetor usually causes this. Clogged carburetors will not provide enough fuel for an engine. When the carburetor choke doesn’t close correctly, too much fuel may flow into the engine. UK Link.

3. Fuel Cap

Fuel consumption increases the gas tank’s pressure. A small vent on the gas cap allows air into the tank to relieve this pressure. Clogged gas cap vents prevent air from entering gas tanks, which leads to a rise in pressure. Often, the engine will not start when the gas tank pressure exceeds the engine’s pressure.

If you are experiencing a clogged gas cap vent, try loosening it slightly and starting the engine—time to replace the gas cap.
